First of all, thank you for taking the time to visit me out here on my little internet home!
My name is Katie Cook. I am a self-taught family photographer here in Grand Rapids, Michigan. My life revolves around Derek, my hubby of 13 years, and our three kids who are 11, 7 and 2. (There we are down below - our photos were taken by the lovely Jodi Hays.) I enjoy reading anything I can get my hands on, I like to drive with no radio on because silence is like music to my ears, and I definitely do not like seafood. I am a diehard NKOTB fan and it doesn't even embarrass me to say that. I go to the same church I was born into and can only pump a hand up to God for giving me this beautiful life.
Photography has always been a passion of mine. When I was in middle school, I would save my allowance for Polaroid film to stage photo shoots in my room. When I was in high school, I would run to the one-hour photo booths with my disposable cameras so I could see how off-base those selfies turned out. In my twenties we started our family, and I went through digital cameras left and right capturing our babies, and in between bottles and diapers I spent hours behind the computer being creative with what I shot.
Luckily for me, I've always had family and friends that had faith in my ability. They called on me to photograph their senior photos, their new babies, their families...they gave me the opportunity to learn and evolve. And they constantly pushed me to make photography more than just a hobby. In 2012, months away from turning 30 years old, I took home a brand new Nikon DSLR and that was all she wrote. Katie Cook Photography was born. It's been six years since that day but it seems like a minute. Photography has allowed me a creative outlet that constantly pushes me, challenges me, and blesses me. It's never lost on me how I get to celebrate important milestones with my clients and be a part of their journey as their lives grow and change. And...as my own life has grown and changed with the arrival of each new child, I have been able to do photography more and work outside of the home less. It's been a perfect balance for me to still do something that fuels me, but also be able to be there for my littles when they need Mom the most.
A little bit about me and my photography style...I like - wait, scratch that - LOVE simplicity. I am a sucker for a good close-up and I die for beautiful golden light. My favorite moments from any session are always the unposed candid shots that I could never plan. I love to see families wrapped up in each other, love to make couples lean in closer, love to make expectant mamas feel gorgeous, and love to cuddle wrinkly new babies. While I edit I do one of two things - listen to Netflix & Hulu or turn on Christmas music. It doesn't embarrass me to say that either! I love me some fuzzy holiday music year-round. ;)
Thanks for reading - I hope to meet you and be able to capture this time in your life!
